Insta360 X5 Review (2026): The Invisible Camera Drone

Insta360 X5

9.4 / 10

VERDICT

The X5 takes the winning formula of the X4 (8K resolution) and adds better low-light sensors. It is the most fun camera you can own. It allows you to "shoot first, frame later," meaning you never miss the action because you are capturing ALL the action at once. The AI editing in the app has gotten so good it practically edits the video for you.

The Big Picture

With a standard camera, you have to point it at the subject. With the Insta360 X5, you just hold it up. It records a full sphere. Later, in the app, you can turn the camera to look at your face, then pan to the scenery, then zoom out to a "Tiny Planet" view. It unlocks creativity that simply isn't possible with traditional lenses.

🪄 Invisible Selfie Stick

The Tech: Automatic stitching.
Result: Because the stick is directly in the camera's "blind spot" between the two lenses, the software stitches it out perfectly. It looks like a drone is following you from 1 meter away, completely silently and legally in "no drone" zones.

🌪️ FlowState Stabilization

Unshakable footage.
Performance: You can run, jump, or ride a rollercoaster, and the horizon will stay perfectly level. It’s better than any mechanical gimbal because it stabilizes the footage digitally using the full 360-degree canvas.

The Pros

  • Resolution: 8K is essential for 360 reframing (keeps the cropped video sharp).
  • Lens Guards: Removable screw-on lens guards save you from expensive repairs.
  • AI Editing: "Me Mode" keeps you in the center of the frame automatically.
  • Waterproof: IPX8 waterproof down to 10 meters straight out of the box.

The Cons

  • Workflow: Reframing 360 video takes time and practice; it's not "instant" like a phone video.
  • Lenses: The bulbous lenses are very exposed and easy to scratch if dropped (always use the cap!).
  • File Size: 8K files are massive and require a powerful phone/PC to edit.

🤔 Should you buy it?

YES if you do action sports (skiing, motorcycling) or want unique travel shots.

NO if you just want to point and shoot high-quality traditional video (get the DJI Pocket 4).
